Tenerife, situated right in the centre of
the Canarian archipelago, is the island with the most surface
area (2,050 square km.). This is where we find Mt. Teide,
which, in addition to being the highest peak in all of Spain
at 3,717 metres, also belongs to one of the most important
natural national parks in existence, Las Cañadas, which covers
in the centre of the island at an average altitude of 2,200
metres.
The climatological variety of the island is
reflected in the landscape, the northern coast being green
and cool with a great variety of crops, while the southern
part of the island offers us an arid and desert-like scenery
influenced also partially by its volcanic terrain.
In Tenerife, in addition to its capital city
of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, one finds various other cities
of character and importance. These include La Laguna (a cultural
city and part of the national heritage, since it was the first
to be contructed), La Orotava (noted for its great houses
built in a pure Canary style with beautiful balconies and
its marvellous valley), El Puerto de la Cruz (one of the most
important touristic areas on the island which still preserves
part of its charm as a fishing village and in which the "Lago
Martiánez" is one of the highlights), Icod de los Vinos (with
its famous Drago tree and its butterfly sanctuary), and El
Sauzal (considered one of the cleanest and prettiest towns
to be in Spain. The area of El Sauzal is also known for having
one of the best climates on the island.
